Subject: Respectfully Request Dredging Past the Kings Park Bluff Town Boat Ramp in to
the Nissequogue river State Park — Protect Access to the Marina
Dear Northshore Boating Community,
For decades, Suffolk County’s Department of Public Works (DPW) has conducted routine
dredging in our waterways when it was necessary — but they have never dredged all the way
to the Nissequogue river state park marina. Every time they stop short, 100 yards past the
Town ramp at the Kings park bluff.
After storms, sand and sediment build up, blocking safe access to the marina and creating
dangerous conditions for boaters, kayakers, paddleboarders, and all water users. This ongoing
neglect is unacceptable and unsafe.
We are demanding the Suffolk County and New York State extend dredging beyond the Town
boat ramp at the Kings Park Bluff and all the way to the Nissequogue River State Park
marina, ensuring clear, safe passage as our community deserves.
Our tax dollars pay for this work — and we have a right to expect the Suffolk County and
NewYork State to properly maintain our waterways from the public Boat ramp at the Kings Park
all the way through to the Nissequogue River State Park marina.
As well the access to the Smithtown and Stony Brook Marina’s in the Porpoise Channel.
The army corps of engineers should be brought in to discuss rock jetties or a sea wall on
either side of the boat ramp to make it safe for Boaters, kayakers, paddleboarders and jet
skiers to launch without being pinned to the dock or kayakers and jet skiers sucked
under the dock do to the high volume of water and fast moving water.
Because the past Several years People have been Severely Injured Surprisingly not
Killed due to Fast moving waters.
And it is way past time to install rock jetties at the beginning of the Nissequogue river
and as well in porpoise channel Stony Brook Harbor.
This is about:
● Public safety and navigation
● Fair and equal access to public waterways
● Holding Suffolk County and New York State accountable for critical infrastructure maintenance
● Preserving our coastal community and way of life
This is non-negotiable:
● Dredging must extend beyond the Town boat ramp
● The marina must remain accessible
● The County, State and Town must be held accountable for ignoring this problem
for too long.
